Rossy de Palma X Ruvén Afanador LFW Art Instillation

LFW MA FINAL PROJECT

A piece of work that has caught the eye of Ruvèn Afanador himself, along with THE Rossy de Palma declaring her admiration on social media platforms. This captivating LFW art piece explored how the journalistic scene has always had an undertone of whacky whimsey.

Utilising a myriad of mediums including air dry clay, newspaper, fabric and paint, the practical section of my final master’s project was an ode to both of these legendary icons of visual culture.

My overall project focus was ‘Deconstructing The Magazine’, and through this I was able to ‘Define the magazine, exploring how consumers react to the intersection of art and lifestyle’.

I presented none other than a deconstructed magazine in the form of an interactive sculpture.

The sculpture, referencing and re-creating one of Afanador’s legendary shoots, is displayed below, articulating how the journalistic scene is one which can have fun with their audience, and toy with the ways in which media content is delivered to the spectator.

The referenced shoot captured by Afanador, features physical newspapers coming out of de Palma’s head. I thought it would be rather fitting if I could somehow have these physical articles be ones which the spectator could take out of the sculptured head and read, and so I have done so. These were made to be accessed from the back of the sculpture within the bed of newspapers flamboyantly crowning her.
